Ziggo Offers Access to Fixed Line Numbers Via Mobile Devices

Dutch cable operator Ziggo has launched a service whereby customers can use their fixed line subscriptions to make calls via their smartphones and tablets. The Ziggo Bapp app, available for Apple and Android devices starting on 8 April, works over Wi-Fi and mobile networks. During a two-month testing period, Ziggo will invite up to 3,000 customers to provide feedback to help improve the app. Customers will be reachable on their landline numbers, even when out of the country, and will be able to make calls to fixed and mobile numbers from the app, with automatic handover between Wi-Fi and mobile networks.

Tarifica’s Take

Ziggo has already deployed a service that provides public Wi-Fi access using shared access to its home routers, and the cable service provider describes this mobile access to fixed line numbers as a logical next step. It appears that Ziggo’s intention is to retain fixed subscribers in an increasingly mobile market, and if the price is right and the app delivers a reliable connection, it may well be effective in that regard.
