AT&T Unveils Mexican Postpaid Plans

U.S.-based operator AT&T has announced details of its new Mexican postpaid plans, shortly after confirming that its subsidiaries Nextel and Iusacell will operate under the AT&T Mexico brand. The new “AT&T Unidos a tu Manera” plans are aimed at users who do not need to acquire a smartphone, and they range from MXN 199 (US $11.65) per month for 500 minutes of calls and 500 MB of mobile data to MXN 699 (US $40.90) for unlimited minutes and 4 GB of data. In addition, all plans come with unlimited social media data and the Prip Wi-Fi service. The operator also announced the extension of its Community offer, allowing all Iusacell, Nextel, Unefon, AT&T and Cricket customers to call each other at no additional cost.

Tarifica’s Take

AT&T’s move into Mexico, in addition to creating a unified North American U.S.-Mexico service area, is also extending U.S. usage habits to the country’s southern neighbor. As a developing country, Mexico has up to now been a heavily prepaid market, but AT&T’s offer of attractive postpaid plans indicates that Mexico is now ready for a payment structure more prevalent in developed economies. As the Mexican market matures, AT&T will be ready to offer what its consumers demand.
